WHAT
MAKES A GOOD WEBSITE?
When the word website is mentioned, what comes to the mind?
To many it may simply be a platform for interacting with a product or service. The
topic of “Web design and what makes a good website” is an important one to
explore prior to designing or developing a website. These principles encompasses
much more than the look and structure of a website. It goes further to analyse
the usability and functionality that can make or break a website. By nature,
design is a subjective case. When making the right design decisions about the
look, feel and content of a website, a lot of things have to be considered.
Before making such decision, it is ideal to first define what good means for
the type of website to be developed and what type of audience the website is aimed
at targeting. According to HACKDESIGN (Rutter K, 2019) It is important to be
aware that a good website happens when a good user experience meets a solid
brand identity. In other words, a great design is established when the web
designer/developer ensures the website utilises a minimalist design that could
go further to ensure the user is able to navigate easily and in turn the
purpose of the website is met.
In this short blog, you will be seeing some ideal web design
principles that constitutes a good website. Below is an infographic conveying
relevant web design principles.
With the increasing number of website
development, web visitors tnd to have a wide range of choice to choose from,
and ideally one would like to vsit webistes that are easy to navigate,
understand and use. This is why usability plays a vital role in the aspect of
web design and forms one of the basic principles of web design. The image to
the left conveys some of the basic principles of web design. However, because
there are many principles of website design, it is vital to note that content
and visual representation plays an important role in the creation of a
qualitative and informative website. Web design principles are very important
to consider and adhere to, as they help to build a positive first impression
with web visitors and makes the website look and feel professional.
Lastly, although it can be perceived that a good website
design may often feel magical, the process itself is not. It entails a lot of
hardwork and mastering. Reading about design alone does not improve one’s
skills. In other words, nothing beats practise and there is barely any short
cuts to mastering a skill.
